On 18 October 1963, France put a Paris street cat 157 km above the Earth and brought her back alive. Sixty-three years later she still hasn't been paid. Hold the cat, collect SpaceX.
In 1963 the French space programme bought fourteen cats from a Paris dealer and trained them for spaceflight: centrifuges, compression chambers, restraint boxes. Cat C 341 stayed the calmest. Scientists implanted electrodes in her skull to record brain activity during the flight. The press later named her Félicette.
On 18 October she rode a Véronique AG1 sounding rocket from the Hammaguir range in the Sahara to an apogee of 157 kilometres. Fifteen minutes of flight, about five of them weightless, then a parachute descent into the desert, where the recovery team found her alive and, by all accounts, unimpressed.
The Americans sent chimps. The Soviets sent dogs. France sent a cat, got her back, and then forgot to tell anyone for fifty years. In 2019 a bronze statue finally went up in Strasbourg. In 2026 she gets a token paired with SpaceX. Progress.
